Nestled in the shelves of any given library in the state of Alabama, a patron pouring through the shelves is likely to stumble upon a copy of a bright blue, inquisitively large, and dog-eared paperback book full of recollections of the state’s oldest and most famous supernatural phenomenon. This iconic tome, 13 Alabama Ghosts, and Jeffrey serves as a tangential inspiration for Corinna Cybele’s latest conjuration as Subhymnal: a four-hour analog horror epic ode to faded memories of quiet afternoons in the library and the impenetrable thoughts that erupted from within while enraptured in the vivid pages of a haunted hymn.

Here Subhymnal offers atonal orchestras imbued with ectoplasm, oozing echoes of disembodied voices amidst spine-tingling and hair-raising pulses of bowed guitars, bugles, samples stretched and squashed to oblivion, and other unidentifiable aural invasions. When the last song on any side concludes, a labyrinth of secret subliminal spaces opens up to those who wait.

Spirits dwell within these tapes; if you play them right they might escape.
